Beginner Tip: Change the default dictionary on the Amazon Kindle

Word definition at the bottom
The lookup feature is certainly one of the most useful on the Amazon Kindle. It allows you to look up word definitions, and also research online.

If you purchase a new Kindle now, it will come with two complete dictionaries, the Oxford Dictionary of English and The New Oxford American Dictionary. Apart from looking up words directly, you can also look for definitions of words in any text, as you read, just by navigating the cursor to it. The word is looked up in the default dictionary.

Here's how to change that default.

  • At the Home screen, press Menu
  • Now go to Settings
  • At this page, press Menu again.
  • Here, again use the 5-way button to select Change Primary Dictionary.
  • Click it
  • You'll see a list of installed dictionaries. These include the pre-loaded ones and the ones you have purchased from Amazon
  • Select the one you want.
When you pause on a word with the cursor, the definition from the selected dictionary will pop up.
