Advertisements coming to Skype

Skype is adding ads to their desktop program, as they announced on Monday.
"We believe that advertising, when done in the right way, will help us continue to invest in developing great products." - Doug Bewsher, Skype CMO.

For now, the adverts will come up only in the Windows version's Home tab. Ads from just one brand will be displayed each day.

Doug Bewsher says, on their blog that they are already working with advertisers including Groupon, Universal Studios and VISA. So I think you can expect movie ads when you fire up Skype to video chat.

As I mentioned before, there will be one brand per day, at least for now. And ads won't be shown all the time. They say that there won't be flashy, pop-up ads. They will be simple banners, like the one you can see in the screenshot at the top of this article. They will also be targeting the ads based on your location, age and gender so you will be seeing relevant ads. And you can optionally disallow Skype to use your personal info to target the ads from your settings.
